ABSTRACT

This chapter is a case study of a successful trial of the use of computer-mediated communication (CMC) for delivery of some forms of police training. I hope to draw some general conclusions on the issues of process, tutor’s role, learning outcomes and evaluation. The aim of this chapter is also to answer some of the key questions associated with the use of computer-mediated communication for training purposes. It is intended to share the experiences gained in running the Gloucestershire Constabulary’s Principles of Supervision Course, which was delivered by computer-mediated communication, asynchronously. This chapter also aims to give a better understanding of the CMC medium and its possible application in the workplace, for education or training purposes.
