ABSTRACT
Introduction Modern renders have developed from the materials used 250 years or so ago, when it became fashionable to finish buildings with a render of lime and sand (or other local aggregates), to emulate more expensive properties constructed from stone. The finish is often referred to as stucco. It was not applied primarily as a weatherproofer and in fact needed regular painting with lime wash to keep rain out.
