ABSTRACT

Up to the end of the nineteenth century a large proportion of commodities came from plant material. Even the first plastic invented in 1870, ‘celluloid’, was derived from cellulose extracted from cotton. By 1920, 70% of all energy consumed in the USA was supplied by coal. Finally, oil became the basis of the world’s transportation systems.
