ABSTRACT

Every scholar, researcher or artist must maintain a sense of perspective. A keen survey of the landscape is essential before one aspect or feature of the vista captures the gaze. To develop the metaphor, at first the flora may seem to yield most interest, but in the process of surveying the field the fauna may force itself more strongly on one's attention. In other words, with a deeper knowledge of the domain, the research topic is almost bound to alter. It is futile and unscholarly to attempt to determine a question or problem before knowing the field . Matthew Arnold's precept was to let the mind play freely around the subject until a focus emerged.
