ABSTRACT

The two words family and literacy have the wholesome glow of something we surely approve of: we are all in favour of families, however we define them, and we all believe in literacy, however we define it. The difficulty is that family and literacy both mean different things to different people. The two words have been put together to make family literacy, an idea which has become prominent in the government's discussion of literacy education, linking adult and child literacy. Family literacy is on the public agenda.
