ABSTRACT

This is an unusual 'paper' for an academic book: it does not follow the rules of the academic 'essay' that have come to dominate academic discourse in the West. Where the 'proper' essay consists of an argument supported by theory and (usually) data, written by a single person or a group adopting a single authorial voice, this contribution consists of a series of disparate comments linked by their reference to a common stimulus - that is, a short piece by me 'Academic Literacy'.
