ABSTRACT

Some people have had poor experiences with their child who has been diagnosed as having particular syndromes, disorders or as belonging to some category. Diagnosis of behaviour can be definite or very subtle and meeting a child's needs or remediating the problem can be anything from good teaching practice to ways of holding a very aggressive child to particular teaching techniques and skills. It is frustrating for the parent to find for instance, that the child has a severe 'word finding' difficulty which affects the child's socialization, or to find that he is considered a naughty boy and receives a smiley face if he manages play without getting into any difficulties. Some adults don't understand that they too need to show him how to learn and to make the connection between what he has learnt and the smiley face chart. The parent may also feel the isolation at the gates, the endless list of misdemeanours in school and the rising negative feelings about the child.
