ABSTRACT

Introduction Realisation of the finite nature of global resources and the greenhouse effect of ever-increasing carbon dioxide emissions has promoted consideration of the potential for recycling in construction of many mass produced waste products which are currently either burned or buried in landfill sites. Such materials include plastics, cardboard, straw, paper and tyres. Whilst some recycled products are only in the experimental stage, others are now becoming recognised as standard building materials. The re-use of building materials is well illustrated by the Earth Centre, Doncaster which is constructed using many recycled and reclaimed products including crushed concrete, telegraph poles, glass and radiators (Fig. 15.1).
