ABSTRACT

The speaker should look at the manuscript, take in a thought or phrase, look up at the audience, and repeat that same thought or phrase-even if he or she makes a mistake in one or two of the words. Whenever it is possible in the manuscript, the thought or phrase should be written on a single line, and the manuscript should be written so that each line is a single thought or phrase unto itself. The manuscript in its first copy should be marked for this arrangement then retyped so that the speaker can recognize this readily. Every manuscript to be read must be edited for speaking.
