ABSTRACT

Who are parish nurses? This simple question requires a somewhat complex answer. In many ways, the profession is still in its formative stages. Its professionals possess a variety of educational preparations and come from diverse health care backgrounds. They bring with them the uniqueness of their individual faith and strong interpersonal skills. Their practice is shaped by the Nurse Practice Act of each state and guided by the scope and standards of practice. Several practice models are beginning to emerge. This discussion briefly describes these considerations.
