School Crisis Interventions: Strategies for Addressing the Consequences of Crisis Events

A number of adverse outcomes are potentially associated with exposure to a crisis event. Given this fact it is not surprising that a variety of school crisis interventions are required to meet school community needs following crises. Interventions will be needed to

1. prevent and/or mitigate common stress reactions, 2. identify those who may develop psychopathology (e.g., post-

traumatic stress disorder, depression), 3. prevent and/or mitigate dangerous coping behaviors (e.g., sui-

cidal and homicidal behaviors), and 4. provide appropriate referrals to mental health professionals.
