ABSTRACT

A young woman spoke with her doctor. She was having problems with relationships. She was using drugs. They weren’t the hard-core drugs, but nevertheless she needed them. She had been brought to the hospital against her wishes. During the conversation with her new doctor she tearfully explained that she was having problems because she missed her mother, who had died. The doctor was empathetic and understood the grief that follows the death of one’s mother. He listened and asked questions about her health and her lifestyle. However, as the conversation continued he began to wonder about the mother’s death. So he asked, “When did your mother die?” “Five years ago,” she said sadly. “That’s why I’m here today and why all of this is happening to me.”
