ABSTRACT

Tourism holds a significant position in the substantial political, economic and social restructuring processes that have taken place in CEE since the early 1990s. By the end of the twentieth century, the impact of travel and tourism in CEE was estimated to have a gross domestic product (GDP) equivalent of €95 billion. The sector was reckoned to employ 21.3 million people, representing 11.7 per cent of the region’s workforce (WTTC/WEFA, 1999).
