ABSTRACT

The Republic of Cyprus, which joined the European Union in 2004, has become one of Europe’s leading tourist destinations over the past twenty years or so. After the Turkish invasion of 1974, which left some of this leading resort under Turkish occupation, the Republic of Cyprus had to restructure its tourism industry and develop new resort areas and attractions. Its success in this rebuilding after 1974 is clearly demonstrated by the fact that in 2005 it attracted 2.5 million visitors.
