The techniques described in this book aren't just pragmatic. A structure of understanding, outlook, even philosophy, underlies them. If you're only interested in practical applications, skip this chapter (for the present). But don't regard it as irrelevant, for practical technique is like technology. Modern technology, as everyone knows, works: but it's no longer fully bound to what science now knows. 1 To develop, it requires re-appraisal in the light of modern scientific discoveries. So when you've successfully used these techniques two or three times, please read – or re-read this chapter.
