ABSTRACT

There are many ways to motivate pupils, such as displaying their work, creating an environm ent conducive to learning, rewards systems, keeping the pace o f lessons flowing, positive discipline and clear ground rules. But any am ount o f attention to these issues will be ineffectual unless we consider carefully what we require pupils to do in the classroom. In this chapter we concentrate on effective classroom manage m ent methods. If learning activities are sufficiently motivating and require pupils to really engage in their learning, then they will stay ‘on task’ and our teaching will be more successful. We shall consider:

• developing group work; • developing routines; • creating clear contexts for learning; • offering pupils a challenge.
