ABSTRACT

Because Social Anthropology has become accustomed to dealing with different systems of values in methodical and objective ways, it can be of considerable value in the study of development. However, development in its various forms frequently brings two different systems of values into confrontation, presenting the anthropologist with new problems and responsibilities. His study becomes political, and as such it demands particular care in the treatment of social values. Constructive comment on the situation depends on methodical and balanced study of all the interests, issues and activities involved. If he throws in his lot with one party the anthropologist puts the credibility of his analysis at stake. To be convincing, a partisan account of a political situation must be very thoroughly researched.
