ABSTRACT

Since 2000, the reputation and acknowledged dominance of Microsoft has come increasingly into question. Found guilty of abusing its monopoly power over the Netscape web browser under US anti-trust legislation, the company has recently been fined a record amount by the European Commission for exploiting its dominant Windows technology. Indeed, a number of countries in Europe and Asia have begun encouraging government agencies to use open source code software, due to concerns that Microsoft has become too powerful in critical software markets.
