Development for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects and by Public Authorities

In the case of nationally significant infrastructure projects, the Infrastructure Planning Commission has power to issue a development consent; such a consent obviates the need for planning permission, and authorises the project and the compulsory acquisition of any land that may be required. Although some public authorities may use the powers in this Act, they are far more likely to be used by large utility companies: see the relevant provisions of the Planning Act 2008 considered below.
