ABSTRACT
This unit is about the materials used in engineering so let’s start by
looking at the materials used in a typical engineered product. Figure
5.1 shows the interior of a low-voltage d.c. power supply of the type
used to supply power to small items of consumer electronic
equipment. The power supply is rated at 12 V, 1 A maximum. For
safety reasons, the power supply is totally enclosed and connection to
the a.c. mains supply is made by means of cable fitted with a fused
13 A mains plug. Connection to the equipment being powered is
made by a second power lead fitted with a d.c. power connector.
