ABSTRACT

Jaspers is perhaps best known in the Anglo-Saxon world for his involvement in theological discussion, and especially for his theoretical relations with Rudolf Bultmann, Karl Barth and Paul Tillich. Jaspers’ reception amongst theologians is problematic, controversial and ongoing, and it will be addressed extensively below. However, before Jaspers’ own reflections on theology, and his debates with individual theologians, are discussed, it is necessary to give a brief account of the theological background to his thinking.
