ABSTRACT

Concerns over the effects of population growth and decline are not new. The idea of sustainability has permeated planning and policy discussions for many years. Rachel Carson (1962), in her book, Silent Spring, detailed the problems for animals, birds, and humans associated with the use of the deadly pesticide DDT. Ehrlich (1968), in his book, The Population Bomb, sounded an alarm heard around the world that warned us about the dangers and effects on the environment of overpopulation. Meadows, Meadows, Randers, and Behrens III (1972), in their book, The Limits to Growth, examined different scenarios of global development and produced computer simulations, for alternative scenarios, of the effects of economic and population growth on the Earth’s resources. The interactions of these scenarios were indeed disturbing to the world.
