ABSTRACT

Recently, there have been several studies which have been presented as counterexamples to the claim that the human sentence processing mechanism (HSPM) rapidly analyzes an input string of words using structural preference strategies to determine the outcome at choice points in the analysis. The studies have questioned the existence (or generality) of the late closure (Cuetos & Mitchell, 1988) and miminal attachment strategies (Abney, 1988; Smith, 1988; Speer, 1988; Speer, Foss, & Smith, 1986, Taraban & McClelland, 1988).
