ABSTRACT

What seemed only recently like an insignifi cant fringe movement in green, sustainable or high-performance facilities has been growing with surprising speed in the commercial and residential construction sectors, and stands to become a driving force for the industrial and heavy sectors by 2020 as well. Not long ago, many building professionals would have classifi ed sustainable design merely as an interesting idea. But awareness of climate change, changes in policy and incentives, and other environmental factors have catapulted it to centre stage, and it is expected to continue to gain prominence in the next ten years. Organizations that consider the potential impacts of this movement will be well prepared for multiple eventualities and can respond with agility to potential threats and opportunities in both the short and long term.
