ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses what constitutes quality instruction for reading and math, presents potential Tier 1 interventions, and discusses considerations for middle schools and high schools. When children engage in silent reading during classroom instruction, reading achievement increases. Effective instruction begins with instructional planning, which involves deciding what to teach, how to teach it, and how best to communicate realistic expectations to the class and to individual students. There are three principles of managing instruction: preparing for instruction, using time productively, and establishing a positive classroom environment. Teaching children at their individual instructional level has consistently led to increased skill, but is also linked to increased task completion and time on task.
