ABSTRACT

Enhancing student success in Tier 3 is dependent on a systematic problem-solving process. Students who continue to exhibit a dual discrepancy in Tier 2 are then referred to the building’s problem-solving team (PST) to collect more data and generate individual interventions. This chapter discusses the problem-solving process and in-depth problem analysis used by PSTs. Using a systematic problem-solving process differentiates problem-solving teams from many traditional student support teams. Once the team has identified the problem, the next step for the PST is to analyze the problem and develop an alterable hypothesis about why the problem is occurring. The analysis will involve information collected during problem identification, and may include collecting additional data. After teams have developed an intervention plan, the next step is to implement the plan and determine if the intervention is being implemented with integrity.
