ABSTRACT

Cognitive complexity/simplicity describes an individual’s discriminating perception of his or her environment or social behavior. This perception describes the way an individual understands, anticipates, and predicts events. Complex and simple individuals also differ in terms of their (a) degree of differentiation (the number of distinct constructs used to describe an idea), (b) degree of articulation (the number of discriminations within those constructs), and (c) flexibility of integration (the complexity of the organization and interrelationships among constructs) (Tiedemann, 1989).
