ABSTRACT

Cognitive style mapping (CSM), a diagnostic technique for determining an individual’s cognitive styles, was developed by Joseph E. Hill, President of Oakland Community College in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, during the 1960s and 1970s. The term cognitive style, according to Hill, refers to the way students receive and process information to derive meaning from their environment and personal experience. Cognitive styles depend on family background, talent, personal goals, and experiences. These factors contribute to each individual’s preferred ways of perceiving, organizing, and retaining information.
