ABSTRACT

The goal of this chapter is to describe an effective and easy-to-use system for diagnosing learners’ knowledge structures. Called the cognitive structure testing system (CS for short), it identifies misconceptions, missing conceptions, and inconsistencies in learner’s knowledge. Here we describe its use to diagnose the state of a novice’s knowledge as it develops during the course of a learning experience, so we can intervene adaptively to repair the novice’s knowledge in order to move it toward the experts’ knowledge.
