ABSTRACT

As I write this chapter, I have just received news that one of my former students is planning to buy a boat and sail around the world, carrying out development work as he stops at various places. Another writes that, feeling very inspired by one of the trips we took, he is planning to work and travel further afield. Indeed, as globalization spreads and recession hits many of the richer nations, architects are looking for work abroad. Not only are they looking for work in a conventional way in offices, some are indeed ‘discovering’ work that needs to be done and doing it. Some are fundraising for development projects, becoming designers, managers and builders of projects too. In an interview with Building Design, the architect Sarah Wigglesworth says: ‘My real education came when I started thinking for myself.’2
