ABSTRACT

Vygotsky's research and writing career spanned only 10 years. Two years after his death in 1934, his writings were banned in his homeland of Russia and were not published openly for the next 20 years. The Western world knew him as the author of one book, Thought and Language, which was not translated into English until 1962. Yet Vygotsky's theoretical vision has been a powerful force in Soviet psychology and has recently become an important influence in the Western world as well. For several years, Western interest in Vygotsky focused on his work in psycholinguistics. The situation changed in the late 1970s when a broader range of Vygotsky's work was translated.
