ABSTRACT

Ghana (then known as Gold Coast) was the first Black African country to gain, on March 6, 1957, independence as a British colony. Its education system was modeled on the British system and was similar to those of former British West African colonies: Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and the Gambia. There had been only minor educational modifications to its structure until the educational reform in 1987. The current ongoing reform has changed both the structure and content of education. There are now 6 years of primary, 3 years of junior secondary, 3 years of senior secondary, and 3 or 4 years of tertiary or university education.
