ABSTRACT

Developing a handbook for a field of scholarship offers an unusual opportunity to examine what is known about the area. I! allows scholars to reflect on present, past, and future. It provides a chance to examine the extant knowledge, to consider the current organization of that knowledge, and to propose new conceptions. I! opens the way to explore fundamental and unresolved questions within the discipline. It offers scholars the opportunity to rethink the paradigms that undergird the discipline and to reexamine prevailing methodologies.
