ABSTRACT

The discipline of instructional design is in a state of transition. An extensive technology is now being challenged. Although the challengers have yet to offer a fully systematic, well-grounded replacement, they have shown weaknesses in the current approach and have begun to demonstrate alternative schemes. This chapter summarizes the current technology and discusses the changes now occurring. The goal is to point in the direction of ongoing instructional design research, stating principles where possible and showing the direction of new work when it is too early to distill principles.
