ABSTRACT

The term ‘neurodevelopmental disorder’ is used to describe conditions which are caused by problems in the growth or development of the brain. They tend to have their origin very early in a child’s life, and by their nature usually have an enduring quality. The group includes disorders of intellectual development and communication as well as specific learning difficulties. Autistic spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and motor disorders such as Tourette’s syndrome fall within this classification. Obsessional compulsive disorder is traditionally considered to be part of the anxiety disorder group, but the qualities that it shares with Tourette’s syndrome, as well as the emerging evidence about its origins make this an appropriate place for it to be considered.
