ABSTRACT

Rather than abstract, universal prescriptions to follow in the execution of professional practice, ethical principles have come about as a result of many years of empirical experience by thoughtful professionals. They function to remind consultants of the common pitfalls our predecessors have experienced. Most ethical issues and dilemmas serve as danger signals advising the consultant to proceed forward with great caution, and possibly to change to another path. This chapter will not review the whole of professional ethics, as useful as that might be. Instead the reader can review professional codes of ethics such as those of the American Psychological Association (APA, 2002, 2010). Rather the focus will be on how to cope with the ambiguous and ever-present problem of ethics in consultative relationships within schools.
