ABSTRACT

It is possible, tempting even, to think of ‘race’ as being in decline, as an issue of diminishing prevalence and importance in sport and the sports media. On the pitch, teams that were once exclusively ‘white’ are now filled with ‘black’ athletes, cheered rather than abused by fans. Off the pitch, the situation is so good that regulators, such as the Press Complaints Commission (PCC), feel no need to chastise journalists on the grounds of racial discrimination.
