ABSTRACT

The following is a report assembled from notes on the two panel discussions entitled “The Scope and Aims of Ethnomusicology,” held at the meetings of the Society in Boston and Cambridge, Dec. 29 and 30, 1958. The wide range of ideas and opinions expressed at these panels merits their reproduction here. The editor thanks Roxane McCollester for her excellent notes on the first panel and takes full blame for any errors of ommission and inaccuracies of statement or emphasis in this report. The blood is moving vigorously in the veins of our young Society: it is hoped that our readers will be sufficiently stimulated, or even outraged, to respond with opinion, counter-opinion, and new ideas.
