ABSTRACT

At the end of notebook XIV of the ‘Theories of Surplus Value’ manuscript, Marx selected three further political economists of the post-Ricardian era whose work he considered warranted some critical recognition. The three writers that he chose were George Ramsay, Antoine-Elis ée Cherbuliez and Richard Jones whose works appeared between 1831 and 1852. They had little in common, although there was some overlap evident in the work of Ramsay and Cherbuliez. In each case, though, some particular aspects of their contributions to political economy caught Marx's attention and lifted them, in his view, above the general ‘also-rans’ of the period.
