Consider a lecture and a conversation. Suppose that the lecture is of a formal nature, with the lecturer either reading from notes or sticking to them very closely; and suppose that the conver sation is between husband and wife deciding where they should go for an evening’s entertainment. What features have these two situations in common, and in what ways do they differ?
