ABSTRACT

The analyses of the language used by the groups of 3-year-olds in the study indicated that there were differences between the groups in the frequency with which particular structural features occurred. These results support the research findings of others, particularly those of Bernstein and his associates, in showing that there are differences in the forms of language used by children from lower and upper socio-economic groups. From the evidence of the present study, it would seem that these differences are developing by the age of 3.
