ABSTRACT
Although there were a number of mergers between 1919 and 1954 not one of them was of any real importance; in most cases little was acquired except copper rollers, goodwill, and a few, usually redundant, machines. It is the effects of the existence of the combine which have to be considered. It continued, throughout the period, to affect both the historical trends and the short-period reactions to new situations.
