ABSTRACT
this study is concerned with mergers in the home soap industry. This industry has been dominated since the late nineteenth century by the firm which William Lever started in 1885 as a small soap factory in Warrington and which has expanded, partly only by acquisitions and unions, until in 1955 it employed a capital of over £400 million.
