ABSTRACT

The time has now come for us to sum up. Previous chapters have shown that the most significant change which has occurred in the City in recent years has been the gradual shift in its trading activities from ‘goods’ to ‘rights to goods’. This chapter, in bringing together the results of our researches into the various activities carried on in the City, examines the more important implications of this change. More particularly it tries to answer the question: What (on certain assumptions) is likely to be the shape of the economy of the City of London in the near- or medium-term future, i.e. up to 1981 or thereabouts?
