ABSTRACT

Science is often mischaracterized as a dispassionate discipline. So much so that scientists who exhibit passion about their work are portrayed in popular culture as evil, unethical, villainous, or worse, “mad.” Science is often introduced to students as a rational, cold, methodical, and solitary process, where only observations and data have an impact on the findings and conclusions scientists draw. The image of the lone scientist toiling away in a laboratory with mysteriously bubbling beakers in the background may align with some students’ attitudes and views about science.
