ABSTRACT

During the past 14 years Indonesia has been experiencing rapid change. After three decades under Suharto’s repressive New Order regime, journalists in the country today enjoy unprecedented press freedom, which makes Indonesia one of the most vibrant media systems in Asia. Freedom House’s 2009 press freedom survey rates Indonesia’s media as “partly free,” with a press environment that has slightly improved since 2006. 1 Reporters Without Borders (2009) even lists Indonesia as one of the two freest countries in the region, after East Timor and before the Philippines. 2
