ABSTRACT

Most of the creative journalistic writing styles and structures are associated with these feature stories, ones that tell “softer,” less timely news. Feature stories are typically seen as entertaining, optional stories that don’t have to be written or read but that nonetheless offer readers an enjoyable reading experience. Beyond lighthearted entertainment, features can offer readers serious optional background information or give them a closer look at current events or trends. Features can present a different perspective on a news happening or on a prominent person. In such instances, the “enjoyment” of the reading experience comes from learning something new or from having one’s eyes opened to a new interpretation of reality.
