ABSTRACT
It seems at times ironic that a genre that generally fi nds reference as a “feminine” genre is equally dominated by the presence of male lead actors. Ronit Bose Roy (Mr Bajaj in Kasautii, Mihir Virani in Kyunki) is referred to as the “Amitabh Bachchan of television.” Producer-director Rajan Shahi calls Alok Nath, who plays the role of Mamaji (maternal uncle) Prakash Chand Sharma in Bidaai, the “soul of the show.” Others like Hiten Tejwani (Karan in Kyunki, the new avatar of Anurag on Kasautii); Ram Kapoor (Jay Walia in Balaji Telefi lms’ high TRPs Kasamh Se, 9 pm-9:30 pm IST, Zee TV, and from October 2007 for about 6 months, as Jaz Thakral on Kyunki); and Alok Nath in Bidaai are all actors who are important players in soap stories.
