Writing recent American history presents numerous hazards and challenges. All historians bring some ideological, partisan, and emotional commitments to their subject, whether it be the Laws of Hammurabi or the constitutional and political crisis of Watergate. But the closer the historian's experience to the subject, the more the obstacles mount. Thus, the immediacy of Vietnam inevitably will influence historians of that conflict for decades to come .
