ABSTRACT

In this chapter I offer some examples of how the presenting problem or problems

for which couples seek treatment can serve as a collusive defense. The therapist

is called upon to help them stop the downward destructive spiral and get back

on track but not necessarily to overhaul their system entirely. Metaphorically,

the couple is requesting a tune-up when a transmission service may be what is

needed. Therapists, however, must consider that some transmissions can last for

years, even though they are not serviced periodically. If the therapist is successful

in helping couples regain their lost equilibrium, they will be more likely to return

for help when the transmission begins to slip.
